The Arpit Children Academy Sec. School

About:

Located on the outskirts of Jaipur, India the Arpit Children Academy was established in 2002 by Murari Sharma. The land for the school was purchased with a 5 lakh loan from Sharma's father. Over the past 12 years the school has grown from serving a couple dozen kids to a couple hundred kids. The school offers education that exceeds that of the national standards and gives underprivledged children living in underserved areas of India the oppurtunity to have access to an education. The passion that Sharma has in his work is mirrored in the nearly 10 volunteer teachers who work at the school and is further displayed through the enthusiasm of the students at the school. At times teachers work with no compensation in the better interest of the children who want to learn but whose families cannot afford the $2 dollar monthly tution for the school. In 2011, Ajay Mittal traveled with his family to India carrying 3 suitcases filled with a varity of textbooks ranging from storybooks to classroom set books. Ajay spent the next week working at the school and documenting his time there. Since then he has visited the school once again and has continued sending books and donations to the school. Over the past year the goal of the organization has been to allow the children access to the internet. Within 8 months power lines were bulit in the village and electricity had been established in the area. Over the next 4 months wifi-connectivity was created and a computer with a webcam was purchased. Ajay had daily conversations with Murari Sharma and only through the hard work and dedication of both of these individuals as well as the donations that funneled in over time the school was finally able to surf the web and Skype with Ajay on a weekly basis. The Skype chats consist of a question and answer session directly between Ajay and the kids at the school, the kids questions could range from anything regard schoolwork to questions about how life in America is. The chats usually last 1 hour and video chat serve as a direct link between Ajay and the student he is talking to. Ajay continues to talk to the school on a weekly basis and plans on creating Youtube videos over the summer about specific subject areas that the students have questions about.
